Please provide your feedback on what descriptors or definitions we would want for the three pillars which will serve as the foundation of our school culture.
Trust is defined as ...reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence.
Respect is defined as...to hold in esteem or honor. ...to show regard or consideration for: to respect someone's rights. ...to refrain from intruding upon or interfering with: to respect a person's privacy.
Responsibility is defined as...the state or position of being responsible. ...a person or thing for which one is responsible. ...the ability or authority to act or decide on one's own, without supervision.
Hello Everyone
As we begin this discussion around and about Trust, Respect, and Responsibility, I wanted to share some dictionary definitions of these three powerful words in hopes to helping myself as well as others to craft their responses. I believe one of the greatest challenges will be to ensure that we have fidelity to these concepts. Have a great day!
So as I continued to contemplate how do we as a team go about building a foundation of Trust, Respect, and Responsibility amongst ourselves that will permeate down to the students that we will serve.
On Trust...I believe that the reason that we have all chosen to be in this place at this time is because at the core of each one of us, we hold the belief that all students can and deserve the chance reach their highest potential and succeed! We want them to not only succeed academically we want to succeed socially, emotionally, and spiritually!
As when new relationships begin, there is a great deal of trust established at the forefront because that is our human nature to trust with radical abandonment because we all hold to our core belief about each other. We also believe and trust that all people are good. Trust begins to erode when that core belief has been compromised in some mannner.
As our students come to us on August 22, 2011, they and their parents have also estabished this radical trust in all of us. They believe and trust that we want the best for them and their students, that we as their teachers and administrators will do everything within our power to manifest our collective core belief.
So the constant challenge for ourselves is ensure that we maintain the relationship of Trust.
Ok that's enough for now...to my English teachers, sorry for the run-on sentences...blame it on the thread of my thoughts.
I like the point Angela made about this being like a relationship, and the fact that we as individuals should have and reflect our school visions.
As the one group said in our meeting Tuesday, we all(faculty and students) chose New Tech to be our school. With that choice, we have agreed to adopt and abide by the aspects of this new relationship with our campus community, similar to a marriage.
Desriptors for "Trust, Respect, and Responsibility": Loyalty to our call Commitment to our goals Faith in our abilities Belief in our mission Dependability from our peers Honor amongst all
I feel that if we set our pillars upon aspects such as these, our foundation will be strong enough to build our community into an empire.
Trust is all about keeping your ego in check and understanding other people. It involves everyone making an effort to learn about their co-workers, knowing their strengths and weaknesses, giving them the benefit of doubt and appreciating their contributions.
Relationships and partnerships that are built on a foundation of respect seem to last...I have witness this type of respect that exists between my parents who just celebrated 47 years of marriage this past Monday. There is a mutual respect that exist between them that allows for the differences of opinions, allowances for shortfalls, and an appreciation for each other's areas of expertise.
While my mother is very good at gardening and doing things around the house she is not expert when it comes to mowing the lawn, triming the hedges or plumbing. While my dad ensured that we had all our needs met while growing up through hard work he is not a financial wizard who can juggle the numbers and know which interest rates are best on home loans, etc.
Just like our team, we have many levels of expertise that we bring to the table so we must be real with ourselves and admit where we are not knowledgeable and Respect the fact those around us can do a better job at some things just because of their level of expertise.
We must also continue to strive to honor and Respect the opinions and convictions of other...afterall we all have that right. We all come from different walks of life that has led us to were we are today. We want our students to adopt this same attitude...so we must model that behavior before them.
We must Respect the boundaries of each other and allow for our individual differences...my parents are often asked...what is the secret to a long marriage and each time they reply, 'I let Ethel be Ethel and she let's me be Albert and vice versa depending on who is answering the question.
I believe that if we allow for each other to be who we are and Respect that...at the end of the day our New Tech village will be strong.
I think of trust as consistently proving oneself to others with regard to certain positive characteristics, such as honesty, dependability, caring, ability, etc. This is done through ones actions, not simply their words, and carries more weight when it is demonstrated under difficult circumstances. When trust is broken, it can be very difficult to regain. It will be critical in our school for students to feel this sense of trust toward all of us, something that we will build over time. Students must also develop trust toward each other. Advisory period, extracurricular activities, and the PBL learning model (with its emphasis on collaborative group work) are some means by which students can develop a sense of trust in each other.
Some might say respect is “treating others how you would want to be treated.” While respect for others is important, self-respect is also critical. You cannot easily respect others if you do not first respect yourself. In a basic sense, respect is showing appreciation for the value of oneself and others (treating others with dignity). Trust and respect are critical to creating a school-wide safe learning environment where everyone in the school feels free to learn, grow, and express their opinions.
Responsibility is being accountable to someone or something. For example, it can be accountability to something like a job or community, someone like a friend, or for your own self. It is important that students develop that sense of responsibility for their own actions and behaviors. Everyone makes mistakes, but responsible people do not hide from them or make excuses but constantly acknowledge and reflect on their mistakes to become better.
Hope you all had a great weekend and had time to reflect on the greatness of America and especially the sacrifices of those individuals who have fought to safe guard our individual rights and freedoms.
On Responsibility...
We are all responsible for something and we all repsonsible to others. I like what Michael stated regarding Responsiblity..."Everyone makes mistakes, but responsible people do not hide from them or make excuses but constantly acknowledge and reflect on their mistakes to become better."
As we build our team we must accept our collective and individual Responsiblity to each other and ourselves. We can strive to create an atmosphere of accountability for what we say we are going to do...actions do in many cases speak louder than words.
However, I do feel that as we build this foundation of Trust, Respect and Responsiblity that if anyone of us find ourselves overwhelmed with our responsibilities we will be open enough to assist each other carry our of individual responsiblity because we know it is for the good of the collective.
We want to foster that atmosphere for our students that will propel them also to be personally responsible for themselves but also for the collective whole. Especially as they work together as teams on their various projects, we want them to accept their roles and responisbilities.
