As we build our advisory period, our discussion caputured many ideas such as: careers, relationships, culture, 21st Century Learning Outcomes, a prompt for journal writing, gender specific groups, college named groups, business trends, character, teambuilding, book review, goal setting beyond academics, bullying, external speakers, skits, recognitions and celebrations, project themes students work on over time, icebreakers, monthly calendar. Please provide any comments or suggestions around these ideas.
This is great for us to keep the conversation moving. I have some great resources for Cyberbullying for us to use!
ReplyDeleteAlso could we really look into the gender specific groupings for specific days of advisory.
Another topic to cover...Business and Social Etiquette
Ok, sometimes I am blog challenged...thus the number of posts and unposts...
ReplyDeleteI was impressed with everyone's ideas, and think perhaps one day a week could be used as a file check for grades, upcoming deadlines, attendance, behavior, etc. so that we make sure our students are never getting behind.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bog fan of Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens." There is a workbook: http://www.amazon.com/Habits-Highly-Effective-Personal-Workbook/dp/0743250982/ref=bxgy_cc_b_img_b that could provide some uniformity/structure in the way the address the issues we've brainstormed.
ReplyDeleteWe have ordered the book: 7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
ReplyDeleteVery good ideas. Also, if we have gender specific groups once a week or so we could join with different groups for a wider discussion.

I fully agree with the basic approach that the group came up with yesterday. Focus on relationships and don't burden the students with lots of extra little assignments. One thing I would like to do and take responsibility for during advisory, would be the building of an online Learning Commons. This is a student designed Web portal for school related information and helpful tools for students. It's the Web 2.0 version of a library Web site. I have been wanting to do this for a couple years and it would be very rewarding for me personally to see it happen. I would wait at least 2 months into the year to even mention this.
ReplyDeleteThere are definitely advantages to gender specific grouping. We are currently doing an initiative called Girl Power and Boys-2-Men. With the boys, for example, we work on things like how to wear ties (we got over 500 donated), dress for interviews, leadership skills, what it means to "be a man", etc. The boys work with male teachers, the girls with female. Also, as Courtney said at the meeting, it allows the students to discuss topics they might not otherwise be comfortable talking about.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas.....I can start taking your ideas and put them in a plan. Thank goodness TAKS is over with. Now, I have time to work on this!!!!
ReplyDeleteAngela please email me the survey. I was thinking about the book: 7 Habits of Highly effective teens too.
I was thinking about each day of the week,we do something different for example Monday-Time out and Reflect, Tueday-Academic Needs, Wednesday- Topic, Thursday-Academic Needs, and Friday-Topic or Theme
Thought some more about this over the weekend. Most of my relationships and mentoring were done through athletics and healthy competition. I learned the applied skills through these activities. Since we will not have sports or UIL competition, maybe our groups can be thought of as teams where we continue projects based around the issues we've discussed as well as fund raisers, volunteer projects, etc. Circle time can include some time for presenting.
ReplyDeleteHi Everyone,
ReplyDeleteI would like to apologize in advance for not being at the meeting last week; I sprained my knee on Tuesday, pretending to be a kid. Needless to say I am not a kid anymore. I will be at the Parent meeting on tomorrow
These are all wonderful ideas. I am very interested in the gender specific groups. I currently teach the female single gender Geometry class, and am a sponsor for our Lady Diamond group. We discuss issues that are important to young ladies. In the past we have had speakers come in to address the students on topics that were kind of difficult. I would love to be a sponsor of this group.
Truly, if there is anything that I can do, please do not hesitate to let me know. I am available at 678-697-7570.
Also, I have made my flight arrangements with Delta, and have registered for the conference.
